Tsunami disability relief fund set up

DNIS News Network - N.C.P.E.D.P. has set up a fund for the rehabilitation of disabled people ravaged by the recent tsunami. Join hands with us in our efforts.

On December 26, as we were preparing for the New Year, a deadly wave killed thousands of people and left many more injured, displaced and family-less. It has been described as the “worst human tragedy in decades”.

At this moment of extreme misery and grief, our heart particularly goes out to those disabled people whose lives have been taken away; to those people with disability who have survived this catastrophe and to those who may have been rendered physically or mentally disabled, by the killer wave.

One wonders about the relief and aid being provided to people, which itself is a herculean task. What efforts are being made to cater to disabled people who may not be able to reach relief camps or stand in long queues or catch the food packets that are thrown from helicopters? More than the treatment to the injured in the hospitals, what is the long-term rehabilitation plan for people who have become temporarily/permanently disabled? And, what is the relief plan for those living with a disability for whom the existing challenging circumstances may have worsened, due the various losses that they may have had to face, including displacement and loss of support systems.

As part of the disability sector, or as a well-wisher, we are sure that your thoughts and feelings would be similar. As in the past, we should get together and reach out to disabled people, who are probably the worst affected in this tragedy.

We have set up a fund called the ‘Tsunami Disability Relief Fund’, towards relief and rehabilitation of disabled victims of the tsunami.

Kindly send your contributions through a cheque or demand draft in favour of ‘NCPEDP’. We also request you to please circulate the appeal to all your contacts, so that we are collectively able to raise a sizeable fund, which will be the disability sector’s contribution towards its own community and towards the nation, during this testing period.
