Special Olympics Bharat accorded priority status

D.N.I.S News Network - The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs has given Special Olympics Bharat priority status by including it in its list of sports federations in the country, thus bringing mentally disabled athletes on par with non-disabled athletes who participate in national and international meets. The priority status entitles the federation to government grants and funding for sports activities.

Special Olympics Bharat, a movement dedicated to empowering people with intellectual disability through sports training and competition has over 2,00,000 athletes from all over the country on its rolls.

The organisation’s first task is to plan for the inaugural Special Olympics World Cup Cricket tournament to be held in Mumbai from 6-13 November 2006 to mark the official launch of the sport for mentally disabled athletes at the global level. Teams from 12 nations including India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, England, Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, U.A.E., West Indies and Zimbabwe will participate in the event.
