The capital all set to get its first fully-accessible bus route

D.N.I.S. News Network - Delhi is all geared up to get its first fully-accessible bus route in the form of route No. 620 - plying between Hauz Khas and Shivaji Stadium. This route will have specially designed buses and bus shelters, which are conducive for people with disability. Six low-floor buses have already been plying on this route and in a few months from now all buses on this route will be accessible ones.

Specially designed bus shelters would include ramps and hand railings on both sides and braille plates with the bus numbers and tactile tiles for visually impaired people. Provisions have also been made in the shelters as in low-floor buses, to accommodate two wheelchairs. There would also be reserved seating arrangements for the aged and people with reduced mobility.

One prototype of the specially designed bus shelter has already been inaugurated based on which all other shelters on this route would be built. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has sanctioned Rs1.01 crore for the construction of these bus shelters and N.D.M.C. and D.T.C. have started work.

Delhi Urban Art Commission’s (D.U.A.C.) Convention recently held in New Delhi also felt the need for a sound public transport system. The panel of experts focused on auto transport, high capacity bus system, and dedicated corridors for all kinds of vehicles. While the experts said that even though ideas for a better public transport were incorporated in the vision plan of the Delhi Government, concrete steps had to be taken to translate the vision into reality.
