First Paralympic medallist wiped away from all official records
D.N.I.S. News Network, India: When Murlikant Petkar won a gold medal in 50 metres freestyle swimming with a world record at the Paralympics in Heidelberg in 1972, he became the first Indian to win an individual gold in either Paralympics or Olympics. Yet, his name finds no mention in any official record of the country! This is not just tragic but a horrific testimony to the state of affairs prevailing in para sports in India. The Paralympic Committee of India (P.C.I), not surprisingly, does not have any record of Petkar. When D.N.I.S. contacted the journalist of a mainstream national daily who broke the story for contact details of Petkar, he too was unable to provide any clue. According to the journalist, all attempts at contacting Petkar had failed.
