S.C. issues notice to Union, State Governments on safety, access for visually impaired
D.N.I.S. News Network -The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Union Government, States and others to take measures for safety and accessibility to roads, public transport and ensure related facilities for people with visual impairments.
Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (P.I.L.), a bench of Justice Y. K. Sabharwal and Justice G. P. Mathur issued the notice on 12 July 2005.
The petitioner, Rajive Raturi, a person with low vision, contended that the lack of facilities for the blind was a violation of the right to life and equality of around 10 million visually impaired people in the country.
The petitioner also said that the visually impaired people faced impediments and difficulties despite provisions of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act 1995, which provides for installing auditory signals at traffic intersections and engravings on the zebra crossings.
