NCPEDP felt it necessary to recognise those who were willing to look beyond disabilities in hiring employees when its research revealed that public sector, private sector and multinational corporations only employed 0.54, 0.28 and 0.05 per cent people with disabilities, respectively.
This was a shocking revelation, since corporate organisations are capable of providing employment to a large number of disabled people.
Helen Keller Awards were instituted by NCPEDP with the support of Shell India Pvt Ltd in 1999 to honour those people and organisations that have contributed to the cause of promoting employment opportunities for disabled people.
