Rajasthan sets example; Introduces low-floor buses in Kota

D.N.I.S. News Network – A fleet of 12 low-floor buses has been introduced in Kota, Rajasthan, as part of the State Government’s plan to implement the Bus Rapid Transit System (B.R.T.S.). Other major towns across the State may also get low-floor buses by June 2008.

Inaugurating the bus service in Kota , Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said it would serve the city’s transport needs and promote private participation in the sector. A new company, Kota City Transport Services Limited, has been set up to run this bus service.

The Chief Minister said that the Kota Municipal Corporation and Urban Improvement Trust would jointly manage B.R.T.S. for the time being. The company would ensure its accountability to people by having the Kota Mayor as its Chairperson, while the Collector would function as the Executive Director.

A Consultant has been appointed to study the scope for launching B.R.T.S. in various other cities of Rajasthan, the Chief Minister stated. The B.R.T.S. will entail an investment of Rs. 470 crores in Jaipur alone, while Jodhpur and Udaipur would be linked with the project subsequently.

Low floor buses are disabled-friendly. The new system will make it possible for orthopaedically disabled people, especially wheelchair users to travel with ease and dignity.
