Lalu promises more disabled-friendly coaches

D.N.I.S. News Network – Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav introduced the Railway budget 2007-2008 on 27 February 2007 and announced increase in provision of special coaches (S.L.R.D. and S.R.D.) for physically disabled passengers.

In the section ‘Special coaches for disabled passengers’ (para 25) Lalu said, “We have manufactured S.L.R.D. and S.R.D. coaches for the convenience of disabled passengers. These specially designed coaches are equipped with wider doors, wider cushioned seats, more aisle passage and specially designed toilets for passengers on wheelchair. So far we have manufactured 1250 such coaches and it is planned to introduce such coaches in all Mail and Express trains over the next 2 years.”

Again, in the section on ‘Staff Welfare’ (para 52), the Railway Minister mentioned that the Railways’ contribution to the Staff Benefit Fund is proposed to be increased from Rs. 30 per person to Rs. 35 per person. Out of this additional contribution, Rs. 2 will be utilised to provide training for developing occupational skills of physically disabled children - especially girls - of Railway employees.
