Supreme Court asks government to fill up job vacancies for disabled persons
D.N.I.S. News Network, India: The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to file a comprehensive status report within September detailing the steps taken to identify the posts for people with disabilities and the measures taken to fill them.
A Bench comprising of Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice B.S. Chauhan gave this direction while hearing a petition on filling up of 3 per cent of the total cadre strength of each department with any type of disabled candidates instead of having 1 per cent reservation each for the 3 categories, namely visual impairment, hearing impairment and orthopaedic disability, as mandated by the Disability Act 1995.
The Court did not agree to the appeal. It, however, expressed displeasure at the fact that the government had not acted in accordance with the mandate of the Disability Act in identifying posts in each department and giving 3 per cent reservation disabled people.
Appearing for the Centre, Additional Solicitor General, Mohan Parasaran informed the Bench that the government is identifying posts in each department and they would be advertised soon.
