Department of Disability Affairs notified
D.N.I.S. News Network, India: In a move that will change the lives of millions of people with disabilities in the country, the Government of India has formally notified the Department of Disability Affairs. This Department will have its own budget and will be headed by a Secretary with 3 Joint Secretaries under him. The total staff strength of the Department will be 150.
Disabled Rights Group (D.R.G.) had been advocating for the creation of a separate Department for Disability Affairs for several years. This demand got a boost when it was included in the 11th Five Year Plan. However, it took five years and almost till the end of the 11th Plan for D.R.G.s persistent advocacy to bear fruit.
