India makes it to Regional Council of D.P.I-Asia Pacific

DNIS News Network - In a significant move, India has been elected to the Regional Council of Disabled Peoples’ International-Asia Pacific.

Javed Abidi, Secretary General of Disabled Peoples’ International (D.P.I.), India, has been elected to the Regional Council of D.P.I. Asia-Pacific. The decision was taken on 14 April at the Regional Assembly of D.P.I.-Asia Pacific held in Bangkok.

Leaders of the disability movement were gathered in the capital city of Thailand for a ‘Regional Training Workshop on Capacity Building for Disabled Persons towards Right-based society in Asia-Pacific Region’. Twenty-three countries participated in the training programme, including India. The programme was inaugurated by Wanlop Ploytabtim, Permanent Secretary of Social Welfare Ministry, Government of Thailand. In his welcome speech, he said that Thailand has paid considerable attention to the promotion of quality of life of disabled people and received global recognition, which shows that Thailand has made remarkable progress and realised the full participation of persons with disabilities.
