Sharath Gayakwad first Indian swimmer to qualify for Paralympics

D.N.I.S. News Network, India: Sharath Gayakwad has become the first para-swimmer from India to have qualified to participate in the London Paralympics to be held this year. Gayakwad has won around 40 national and 30 international medals in his career so far, which includes a bronze medal at the 2010 Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, China.

As per 2010 year end rankings, Gayakwad is ranked number 13 in the world in his category in 100 metres Breaststroke. He is also the Asian record holder in his category in two events 50 metres Butterfly and 50 metres Breaststroke. It may be mentioned that National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (N.C.P.E.D.P.) in association with MphasiS had supported Gayakwad before the Commonwealth Games in 2010.
